Oedipus – The Code Breaker (Immersive Cybernetic Total Theatre)

Following their successful appearance at Tate Britain with Apocalyptic Cybernetic Theatre Act OEDIPUS, Studio for Electronic Theatre has been working on a follow up. The result is an immersive cybernetic theatre experience which explores the disjunctures between the virtual, a technically sophisticated cybernetic hyper-reality, and the actual, a crude and brutal everyday reality where the restless and fearful human-being is caught in a set of dilemmas and discrepancies which overshadow the dawn of the 21st century.

Oedipus – The Code Breaker follows SET’s doctrine of being always at the forefront of the technological innovation, while keeping in mind that the prime purpose of theatre has always been and always will be a sincere encounter with fellow human beings. In this production the audience are invited to use their smart gadgets as cutting-edge augmented reality toys enabling them only to see the despair of a new race of people emerging from the world filled with misery on a horizon of our blithe, self-obsessed, mediated world – a race called refugees.

As in the original myth Oedipus starts his journey as a king and arrives back at his point of departure as a refugee. But, aren’t they both, following some higher logic informed by our transient nature, one and the same? Oedipus’ curse lies in the fact that he has to solve this same riddle all over again. At the location where some famous queens and kings of old were born, lived and died (remains of Royal Placentia Palace), Studio for Electronic Theatre takes you on an exciting journey with the king who has, for centuries, been an icon of our limitless limitedness – a journey which might prove to be both painful and yet very cathartic for each of us.

Studio for Electronic Theatre is a joint initiative of the University of Greenwich (UK); tg Cactusbloem, Antwerp (Belgium); Magadatt, Amsterdam (NL); and PVC-T, Novi Sad (Serbia)

Lecture by Architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe

Benjamin Garcia Saxe’s ‘A Forest for a Moon Dazzler’ won first prize in the private house category at World Architecture Festival (2010) held in Barcelona.

‘The architect addressed the practical and emotional needs of his mother’s security by creating a home for her to occupy alone, while also satisfying his inventive curiosity with a new form of bamboo moucharabieh screen that responds to movement and light. In his narrative there was sincerity in how the character and needs of the client related to the final architectural outcome,’ said the jury.

Benjamin will be speaking about this project, on more recent projects such as ‘Containers of Hope’ and give an overview of his practice.

New Exhibition: PARALLEL HORIZONS

The Baasher Ghor/ Bamboo House projects will be shown as part of the Stephen Lawrence Gallery‘s programme for the coming year.

This latest group exhibition runs from 21st January – 28th February 2013, will present research and archive gathered over the last year, with a focus on incubating ideas in the form of new artists and designers collaborations within the gallery space.

To accompany the exhibition we are looking for expert researchers and practitioners to give a lecture and carry out workshops involving the public. Please contact us or the gallery curator directly.

PARALLEL HORIZONS

Curated by Saif Osmani

An international research-based exhibition looking at the multiple ways in which bamboo has been abbreviated in a context of space, in place-making and within the process of establishing national boundaries. Each project explores cross-cultural interaction and linkages forged through material and spatial syntax, in the formation of cultural codes and future identities across borderlines.

Parallel Horizons stems from Baasher Ghor/ Bamboo House, an on-going collaborative platform which brings together 35 practitioners from four continents, including architects, artists, designers, sculptors, photographers and oral historians, with the aim of rediscovering stories and narratives misplaced through human migration and interpolation.

A talk and seminar will be scheduled during the exhibition.
